80 Years of Victory in Europe:
To honour this milestone, Bravery In Arms has produced a three-episode documentary series to give a general overview of the crucial combat operations of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and the 1st Canadian Corps during the final battles to liberate the Netherlands and secure total victory over Nazi Germany in May 1945.

Episode 1: The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion – Operation Varsity
March 24th 1945, Focus on the elite 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, whose daring airborne operation as part of the British 6th Airborne Division, played a significant role in securing key positions across the Rhine, into Germany. The episode chronicles the parachute drop on top of enemy lines, and highlights their daring courage to secure vital grounds in support of the Allied invasion of Germany.
Episode 2: The 1st Canadian Infantry Division - Operation Cannonshot.
On April 11th, The 1st Canadian Infantry Division undertook the daring assault crossing of the Ijssel River. Following the capture of Wilp, the division pressed forward, liberating numerous towns en route to the Grebbe Line. Among these was the city of Apeldoorn, an important regional center. The seizure of Apeldoorn dealt a severe blow to German occupation forces and provided a morale boost to the local population who were long awaiting their day of liberation.
Episode 3: The 5th Armoured Division and the Dawn of Peace - Operation Cleanser
The final episode reflects on the momentous conclusion of the campaign— The rapid advance of the 5th Armoured Division from Arnhem, moving North towards Ijsselmeer Lake. Including the infamous battle of Otterlo and the official surrender of Nazi forces at the De Wereld Hotel in Wageningen on May 5th 1945. This instalment emphasizes the suffering of the Dutch People, honouring the sacrifices made and the enduring legacy of the Canadian forces in bringing freedom to Europe.
Through archival footage, re-enactment battle scenes, interviews, and the evocative artwork of war artist Roger Chabot, this documentary brings to life the heroism and determination of Canada’s armed forces during one of the most defining moments in modern history.
BIA Director and Producer Roger Chabot with Executive Producer Tony Battista and the Team members invite you to join them in remembering and appreciating the vital contributions of the 1st Canadian Corps and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion to the Allied victory in Europe.
Historians, Jimmy Hilgen and Tjarco Schuurman, Co-Founders of the D-Day Dodgers Foundation, acted as local experts and guides.
The Documentary and the accompanying painting(s) will be unveiled and presented to the public preceding Remembrance Day in November 2025.

Pour célébrer cet événement marquant, Bravery In Arms a produit une série documentaire en trois épisodes offrant un aperçu général des opérations de combat cruciales du 1er Bataillon de parachutistes canadiens et du 1er Corps canadien lors des dernières batailles pour libérer les Pays-Bas et assurer la victoire totale sur l’Allemagne nazie en mai 1945.

Épisode 1 : Le 1er Bataillon de parachutistes canadien – Opération Varsity
Le 24 mars 1945. Pleins feux sur le 1er Bataillon de parachutistes d’élite canadien, dont l’audacieuse opération aéroportée au sein de la 6e Division aéroportée britannique a joué un rôle important dans la sécurisation de positions clés de l’autre côté du Rhin, en Allemagne. L’épisode relate le largage de parachutistes au-dessus des lignes ennemies et souligne leur courage indéniable pour sécuriser des positions vitales en soutien à l’invasion alliée de l’Allemagne.
Épisode 2 : La 1re Division d’infanterie canadienne – Opération Cannonshot.
Le 11 avril, la 1re Division d’infanterie canadienne a entrepris l’audacieux assaut de la traversée de l’Ijssel. Après la prise de Wilp, la division a poursuivi son avancée, libérant de nombreuses villes en route vers la ligne Grebbe, dont Apeldoorn, un important centre régional. La prise d'Apeldoorn porta un coup dur aux forces d'occupation allemandes et remit le moral de la population locale qui attendait depuis longtemps le jour de la libération.
Épisode 3 : La 5e Division blindée et l’aube de la paix – Opération Cleanser
Le dernier épisode revient sur la conclusion mémorable de la campagne : l’avancée rapide de la 5e Division blindée depuis Arnhem, vers le nord, en direction du lac Ijsselmeer. On y retrouve notamment la tristement célèbre bataille d’Otterlo et la reddition officielle des forces nazies à l’hôtel De Wereld de Wageningen, le 5 mai 1945. Cet épisode met l’accent sur les souffrances du peuple néerlandais, rendant hommage aux sacrifices consentis et à l’héritage durable des forces canadiennes qui ont apporté la liberté à l’Europe.
À travers des images d’archives, des reconstitutions de scènes de bataille, des entrevues et les œuvres évocatrices de l’artiste de guerre Roger Chabot, ce documentaire fait revivre l’héroïsme et la détermination des forces armées canadiennes durant l’un des moments les plus marquants de l’histoire moderne.
